Ancient trees

Judas tree

The composer and musician Augusto Massari decided to place the Judas tree in his house garden, next to the Augustus Arch parks in the 20’s. The Judas Tree (Cercis Siliquastrum L.) is generally a small, shrub-like plant, while this one reaches exceptional size: it is 36ft high and its circumference is about 67in, not to mention the crown, which covers a 15m area with its purple flowers.

Quercua Pubescens

The Quercus Pubescens is presumably 150 years old (52ft high; 66ft crown width; 107in circumference ). It is a great durmast oak with a huge crown due to a poor pruning. We can find it in Giovanni Paolo II Park. This oak represents an historical and natural bond with the heritage of these places, since it grew up on the fields along the shores of the creek Ausa that was diverted and channelled underground in the 70’s. Nowadays a bike lane leading to the sea follows the old course of the river.
